All “Yukon Experience” tours include this itinerary.
Departing Skagway we begin our journey north by traversing the rugged White Pass summit. As we parallel the famous White Pass Railroad we will be stopping frequently for photos and discussion. Surrounded by long forgotten Gold-Rush history, glaciers and the beautiful waterfalls they create, we also frequently encounter a variety of diverse wildlife. Next we will be traveling above the tree line and leaving the Coastal Temperate Rain Forest behind. Passing through a glacially carved alpine environment known as the “Tormented Valley” we cross into Canada and make our way towards The Yukon. Continuing north the scenery changes dramatically as we drop back down into the Boreal Forest and it’s unfathomable immensity is realized.
Enjoying views of massive waterfalls, glaciers, lakes, and forests along the way, we even have a surprise in store … “The Worlds Smallest Desert” sits in the heart of the forested Yukon wilderness! There is always a chance to see wildlife, including bears, mountain goats, and bald eagles. On our lucky days, we occasionally see Moose and Lynx!
We will break for lunch and have a look around scenic Carcross, Yukon. This small native village has a history many millennia older than the gold rush and once there it is easy to see why. Our turn around point is Emerald Lake Yukon, a beautiful multicolored lake that lies about 75 miles from Skagway. The Yukon is home to a variety of fascinating wildlife, landscapes, history, and people, and with Elements of Alaska Tours in Skagway, you’ll get a taste of it all!
